Mandela Day Youth Graffiti Mural Workshop
In commemoration of Mandela day the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Conjunction with Heal the Hood Project are hosting a #cocreate workshop. Thirty keen youth from Art Vibrations II Incorporated, an NPO based in Ocean View, will be part of a collaborative Graffiti Mural workshop hosted by Heal the Hood Project in collaboration with one of Cape Town’s rising Graffiti Artists Nardstar*.
Nard honed her wall painting technique by concentrating on basic letter fills, line and colour work. In addition to being an experienced graffiti writer, Nard has a background in graphic design that adds to her artwork. Vivid portraits, caricatures of animals or abstract shapes are all staples of Nard’s style. Nard’s work has appeared on walls throughout South Africa and America most recently at The Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn.
Participating youth will work on a commemorative mural to honour the late honorable Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela together with Nardstar* to create a co-created mural which will later be mounted for display. During the course of the day youth will also be entertained by Emile YX? and Mixed Mense, who will be performing a talented fusion of endemic South African dance styles such as Zulu,Gumboots, S’bujwa mixed with Breakdance. They will also host a B-Boy and Popping workshop with the youth.
By working with youth from the Cape Flats in a space such as Department of Design. the aim is to show youth that by harnessing art and collaboration, they can make a sustainable career for themselves as visual and performance artists and that gangsterism, crime and poverty are obstacles that can be overcome through hard work, creativity and perseverance.
