Social Development of a New Shopping Mall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town

Yesterday the #cocreateSA team visited the building site of a future shopping mall in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, developed by the South African-Dutch Mandalay Group. Both the development of the project as well as the managing of the actual mall is empowering the local community through job creation and training of local residents. The project managers recruit local employees from the community and aim to spend at least 15% of the total budget locally. Extensive contact with the ward councils has ensured maximum impact for the community in terms of job creation and practical solutions.

This local project is a collaboration between the Khayelitsha municipality, the private sector and the local community. Project manager Daan van Luijk explains: “Together we try to make the impact on the community as big as possible. We started talking with the community and really worked hard to get their support. We strive to add value to the community and look at practical needs. What we now have is a permanent partnership and we hope that we can do more projects together in the future.”

The mall is scheduled to open towards the end of July 2016 and should provide more than 500 jobs. The developers are hoping to create a snowball effect in local development and are aiming to make the area more attractive for future investors. We wish the Mandalay Group and all their local partners the best of luck and we would love to pay another visit once the mall is open!
