Q&A with Commodity Discovery Fund’s Willem Middelkoop

On the program of Mining Indaba, we came across the name of Willem Middelkoop. A bold name in the investment world: as co-founder of the Netherlands-based Commodity Discovery Fund, he focusses primarily on Canadian-listed mining and exploration companies to invest in. Additionally, he has been a private investor in Canadian (junior) mining companies for over 10 years, and is an expert in discovery investing. Mr. Middelkoop ceased his work as a financial journalist in 2009 but is still an active writer, publishing books on financial and economic topics.  Let’s find out what we can expect from him at Mining Indaba.

Q: What is your goal at Mining Indaba?

A: “Mining Indaba is the largest gathering in the mining sector in the southern hemisphere. The amount of people attending and the broad programme always make the long trip worthwhile.”

Q: What are the biggest challenges & opportunities in mining anno 2016?

A: “After a 5-year long correction many companies are struggling to survive, especially the smaller ones. But this also brings amazing opportunities for value investors like us.”

Q: What will 2016 bring for commodities?

A: I am quite sure, based on all early indicators, we are in the last phase of this multi-year correction. A recovery, especially for the precious metal sector, could start any moment now. Actually gold is up in almost all currencies, except the dollar and Swiss franc.”

Willem Middelkoop is part of a panel discussion on Investment Options for Junior Mining Companies, taking place on 8 February at 15.00 hrs, as part of the Mining Indaba program.
