World Aquaculture Society 2017 in Cape Town

Aquaculture is a relatively small industry but with a big impact.

From 26 – 30 June 2017 for the first time a group of Dutch companies under the name Dutch Aquaculture Experts (DAE, see www.dutch-aquaculture-experts.com) presented themselves as a group at this world conference. With about 1400 participants it was a big event and for the first time on African soil. An African Chapter of this organisation was also established at the conference and as a result, within 2 years there will be a conference of this Chapter on the continent.

As the conference was in Africa there was a certain focus on the continent. In a number of countries aquaculture is growing. Especially in Nigeria the industry is big. Uganda, Ghana, Kenya and Zambia are emerging. Allthough aquaculture is a focus area for South Africa policy developments there are slow. Investment issues and licensing problems are amongst  the reasons. Also natural circumstances are not always favourable. Dutch participants were positive about the conference. Knowledge was shared and new contacts made besides the fact that also to present the companies in a ‘BV Nederland’ way was felt as a good step.

Thank you to everyone who attended the networking reception in light of the World Aquaculture Summit this week. It was an exciting opportunity to network and to meet both Dutch and local businesses and stakeholders in the aquaculture space. Through these Dutch – South African Partnerships in the aquaculture sector we hope to co-create ideas and innovations for a sustainable future in South Africa and the Netherlands.
