What if farmers as innovative food producers could sustainably feed the growing population of our cities?
To feed its growing urban population, South Africa needs efficient farms close to its cities, which minimise the impact on the natural environment while increasing their yield and providing secure employment for farmers and farm workers. The sustainable production of nutritious and affordable foods, both for home use and for international export, calls for new farming models, involving innovative technologies and new forms of collaboration within the sector.
The workshop includes a keynote by Mzokhona Mvemve (East London Industrial Development Zone) and will bring together the foremost Dutch and South African experts on food security, encouraging collaboration between the two countries in this sector. Local farmers will also be in attendance to add to the depth of this exploration for a sustainable and viable solution to our food security challenges.

The PlastOil technology transfers plastic waste into valuable fuel. PlastOil South Africa has the rights to South Africa for a technology owned by the Dutch company Petrogas, enabling the production of SANS 342 specification low sulphur diesel from plastic. PlastOil South Africa and Petrogas are looking to set-up projects that benefit the Polyolefin plastic fraction which can be found in municipal solid waste (MSW). Through the setup of such projects and working collectively with municipalities, controlling bodies, industry organistions, the long term vision is to reduce the volume of plastic making its way to landfill.
In Department of Design, PlastOil will showcase innovative technologies and present alternatives to landfilling waste plastic. PlastOil will be introduced through the viewing of a video and then engagement on the various benefits of the PlastOil system and it being implemented in South Africa. It will also be an opportunity to engage and interact with the attendees with regards to the challenges that PlastOil face in securing feedstock within the Western Cape and South Africa.

Event Details
Professor Edgar Pieterse is an urban scholar, writer and creative agent whose interests include the theory and practice of policy discourses and interventions to make cities more just, open, fun and accessible. He holds the South African Research Chair in Urban Policy at the University of Cape Town and is founding director of the African Centre for Cities. Formerly a special policy advisor to the premier of the Western Cape, he is the author of City Futures: Confronting the Crisis of Urban Development, co-editor of Africa’s Urban Revolution (2014) and Rogue Urbanism: Emergent African Cities (2013) and Consulting Editor of Cityscapes.
Dr. Michelle Provoost is an architectural historian, curator and consultant on urban planning and architecture affairs. She is a partner in Crimson Architectural Historians (est. 1994, Rotterdam) with whom she engaged in a large number of research and design projects, publications and articles in national and international magazines. From 2009 on she is the director of the International New Town Institute in Almere, the Netherlands, a non profit think-and-do-tank, aiming to contribute to the quality of new cities worldwide.
At Department of Design, Dr. Provoost will present a keynote lecture entitled Density of what? The Problem with New Towns. The case of Atlantis and Wescape confronts us with the question: Can two wrongs make a right? While the unprecedented urbanization worldwide seems to ask for many new cities and they are on the drawing boards, we can ask ourselves if New Towns are always the solution. Is it possible to make a good city from scratch? The outdated modernist principles of zoning and efficiency have given way to more urban dense concepts of the good city, but if we talk about density we should ask: Density of what?
Professor Edgar Pieterse will present a keynote lecture entitled, The Relevance of Densification in the Context of the Integrated Urban Development Framework. President Zuma announced in his recent State of the National Address that the government will publish the draft Integrated Urban Development Framework by the end of July for public review. The talk will explore the significance of densification imperatives in the context of this policy agenda.

The basic principle of shading did not change since the stone age. SolarSwing developed a new type of shading system that can save a lot of energy for office buildings. It is an interior system with transparent blinds that keep the heat and glare outside, but let in plenty of daylight for a healthy and productive working environment. Because the heat is reflected outside, office buildings can save significantly on airconditioning systems, resulting in payback periods typically between 1-3 years. The blinds automatically follow the sun and can be controlled with an app. The product is compatible with building control systems and is not connected to the grid; it powers itself. Join our pitch and see how shading can be a solution

Event Details
What if we could design our cities to become more integrated and more sustainable?
Twenty years after democracy, South African cities remain divided, fragmented, inconvenient for the poor and uninspiring. It is uncontested that the current situation is socially, economically and ecologically unsustainable.
The Density Syndicate emerged as a think-tank initiative by the African Centre for Cities (ACC) and International New Town Institute (INTI) with the support of the City of Cape Town and in partnership with VPUU. Its aims is to explore how to achieve densification for three sites in Cape Town, using the combined design intelligence of Dutch and South African designers and urbanists.
During the workshop at Department of Design, an esteemed panel will act as critics for the outcomes and proposals of the initial investigations, with a local audience also present to engage in the discussion. The speculative designs will be included in ACC’s exhibition entitled City Divided | City Desired.
Keynote presentations by Edgar Pieterse & Michelle Provoost will build up to opening the workshop session.

Event Details
Henk Mulder is the Deputy Mayor of Almere, and will speak about the plans for the Floriade 2022 World Expo. Every ten years since 1960 a world horticultural expo has been organised: the Floriade. After Rotterdam, Amsterdam (twice), Zoetermeer, Haarlemmermeer and Venlo, it is now Almere’s turn: this is where the 7th Floriade will be staged in 2022.
A Floriade is a large international exposition demonstrating innovations in the field of horticulture. Increasingly important is the legacy of the Floriade, what remains afterwards. The core of Almere’s plans is the development of a prototype of a Green City or district, a green variation of the Cité Idéale, where the Dutch horticultural industry can present itself to the world in 2022, which will also act as the main legacy.

Shake the World, wear the bracelet. An amazing journey of social entrepreneurship, branding and partnerships.
Shake the World is a SA-NL fair fashion brand founded during the World Cup 2010 with an orange beaded fair trade bracelet sold to Dutch soccer fans. This became a massive media hit and since then we sold almost 500.000 bracelets worldwide that were proudly produced by over 1000 female crafters in KZN earning an additional income to lift them out of poverty.
All of this was accomplished in a social entrepreneurial approach and through public private partnerships with our NGO partner Africa Ignite, Government (SA-NL- CBI) , Fashion (Edgars), other corporates all adding their value to the movement. Without a marketing budget we managed to inspire millions of people around the world with our social awareness and guerilla marketing campaigns leading to massive free publicity also by our media partners like SAfm.
We believe social branding is the future and we like to tell you more on our mission to become the most likeable social brand. In our session we will look back on our turbulent and inspiring journey, but moreover we hope to go forward to explore how we can work together and can create (long term – brand) value for our organisations, women and the world! So please join our session and come to collect your collectors item bracelet!

JAM* architects + planners is an agency for design and research. Working from region to city and from building to public space. From design to research and publications. With a special interest for strategy and the process of making spatial plans with attention for details.
In Department of Design, Jeroen Mensink from JAM* would like to invite local professionals, politicians and academics of urban and regional planning. The aim is to show a broad audience the importance of integral regional and city planning by showing the results of the last major national planning operation in the Netherlands: “The Vinex,” from 1995 until 2005. And hereby exchange knowledge and experience about the integral approach of the Vinex as a unique Dutch expertise that finds a growing demand in South Africa.

Event Details
How can connecting local craft traditions to contemporary markets create sustainable businesses?
This panel discussion aims to connect South African businesses to Dutch counterparts with the aim of fostering mutually beneficial long-term relationships. The need for ‘contemporary local,’ for the tangible and the specific, has inspired contemporary designers to take up and transform local crafts, in their own countries and abroad.
In the Netherlands crafts that had almost disappeared were revived by prominent designers, while in Brazil, India and China collaborations between crafts communities and contemporary designers have led to inspiring results that have created new jobs for local communities. The panel will focus on what these developments mean for South Africa, in terms of shaping and representing a specific and contemporary local South African culture, and of developing a sustainable business with international scope.
A related keynote by Ineke Hans & Inga Gubeka will commence shortly thereafter, followed by an informal drinks reception.
This workshop is a co-creation between Department of Design and the Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI).s.

Event Details
NL Architects aspire to catalyse urban life. The Amsterdam-based office is on a constant hunt to find alternatives for the way we live and work. How can we intensify human interaction? We understand architecture as the speculative process of investigating, revealing and reconfiguring the wonderful complexities of the world we live in.
Can we compress banality into beauty; squeeze the sublime out of the obvious? How can we transform, twist, bend, stack, stretch, enhance or reassemble the components that constitute our environment into new and better configurations?
Often, projects focus on ordinary aspects of everyday life, including the unappreciated or negative, that are enhanced or twisted in order to bring to the fore the unexpected potential of the things that surround us. By sampling existing fragments of reality and recombining them, gluing bits and pieces together into new coherent arrangements, our architecture can be understood as The Remix of Reality: the architect as DJ.

Agri meets Design will discuss redesigning agriculture: the role of designers in rethinking.
Our current food system is facing major challenges. How will we feed our growing cities? How can we combat food waste and how do we involve more people in modern farming?
To address these challenges we need a new perspective. Agri meets Design is a platform that enables farmers, designers and professionals to rethink agriculture and co-create solutions for our future food system. The keynote will address this topic and will elaborate on the experiences of Agri meets Design in South Africa. How can South African designers contribute to our local and global future food system?

Common Methods was initiated to contribute towards the development of the networks between NL + ZA designers, manufacturers and the public. It aims to bring designers to uncommon territories, to stimulate new developments through collaboration and promote knowledge exchange and personal development.
In the workshop ‘Perception, Meet Reality,’ designers will be exposed to experiences and generate outcomes of a cultural, methodical and materialistic exchange. Participants will be taken through the movement, experience and unfolding of the designer’s development: new perceptions, reflecting on visual archives, juxtaposing reality, all done by materialising and expressing their personal views.

Event Details
Many cities around the world are dealing with problems like poverty, housing and unemployment. These so called “wicked problems” cannot be dealt with by single solutions, but by starting a process of change. Remy Jansen believes that the strength of architecture today is the role of the design process as a catalyst for these complex problems, because architecture itself is wicked. With his developed skills and design method, Remy Jansen wants to engage in collaboration with stakeholders to be of use in the sustainable development of South Africa’s cities.
In this session, he will present project on which his thesis was based during his Masters of Architecture and would like to continue with local parties. The project is about a combination of a top-down and bottom-up approaches in design and development of vocational training centres in the informal settlements of South Africa.
After presenting this project, Remy Jansen would like to have a conversation/discussion with the audience to get their input on the project and to see if there are any potential parties to collaborate with to further develop this strategy/project. Remy Jansen is a Dutch architect that has recently graduated at the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam. Jansen has various experiences in studying the informal urban contexts, triggering sustainable development progress in townships.

Critical gaming practices: Alex Apsan Frediani in conversation with Liza Cirolia
Alexandre Apsan Frediani is co-director of the masters programme in Social Development Practice at the Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London (UCL). He has worked extensively in various parts of the world, in-part exploring the potential of urban games to address injustices in the city — especially when applied in contexts of informal settlement upgrading.
In a wide ranging conversation with Liza Cirolia, a housing policy specialist who co-convenes the Human Settlements CityLab at African Centre for Cities, Frediani will discuss the capacity of urban games to creatively engage with social diversity and power relations and foster cross-scalar thinking. He will also share some of his experiences working with Architecture Sans Frontières in Salvador (Brazil), Nairobi (Kenya) and Quito (Ecuador) with local collectives who embedded participatory design initiatives within their wider agenda of deepening democratic practices in the city.
The conversation forms part of ACC’s Serious Fun initiative — a strand of a forthcoming exhibition on Cape Town.

My life has been spent trying to find a context in which to explore art, sex, sexuality and gender restrictions. In a country where sexual education is really a matter of life and death, we still perceive sex as a taboo subject.
Through the persona of Lady Skollie, I want to consolidate the perceptions of youth, sex and art. I paint slightly offensive watercolours of genitals and fruits, have sex parties in the name of ‘sexual awareness’ and host a weekly sex talk show on Assembly Radio called Kiss and Tell with Lady Skollie.

Innovative waste water treatment technologies focused on energy production and nutrient recovery.
In this presentation Aquest Colsen will present the latest developments in municipal waste water treatment, focused around energy production through efficient conversion of organic matter to biogas.
Can waste water treatment works be energy neutral or a net energy producer? Aquest will provide our attendees with the latest developments in this field, both from a theoretical background and from experiences with pilot research and full-scale installations from the Netherlands. In addition, the workshop will focus on the latest developments in the treatment of sludge which is released in waste water treatment installations, such as new trends and possibilities in anaerobic digestion of sludge. Aquest will demonstrate the advantages of treating waste water sludge at thermophilic conditions, resulting in higher energy production and less residual sludge.
Aquest will also demonstrate the technologies which have been developed in the Netherlands around recovery of fertilisers from urine. Instead of being only a waste product, urine can be seen as a source of nutrients which have residual value. In the presentation, Aquest will provide the theoretical background and show pilot and full-scale results of these technologies.

Thirty keen youth from Art Vibrations II Incorporated, an NPO based in Ocean View, will be part of a collaborative Graffiti Mural workshop hosted by Heal the Hood Project in collaboration with one of Cape Town’s rising Graffiti Artists Nardstar*.
Nard honed her wall painting technique by concentrating on basic letter fills, line and colour work. In addition to being an experienced graffiti writer, Nard has a background in graphic design that adds to her artwork. Vivid portraits, caricatures of animals or abstract shapes are all staples of Nard’s style. Nard’s work has appeared on walls throughout South Africa and America most recently at The Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn.
Participating youth will work on a commemorative mural to honour the late honorable Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela together with Nardstar* to create a co-created mural which will later be mounted for display. During the course of the day youth will also be entertained by Emile YX? and Mixed Mense, who will be performing a talented fusion of endemic South African dance styles such as Zulu,Gumboots, S’bujwa mixed with Breakdance. They will also host a B-Boy and Popping workshop with the youth.
By working with youth from the Cape Flats in a space such as Department of Design. the aim is to show youth that by harnessing art and collaboration, they can make a sustainable career for themselves as visual and performance artists and that gangsterism, crime and poverty are obstacles that can be overcome through hard work, creativity and perseverance.

Event Details
The Bow Exchange Project is an engagement of folklore inclined Nguni and KhoiSan musicians/artist/performers, who play the traditional bows – uHadi, uGubhu and umrhube and others – and draws on the astounding range of vocal sounds used in traditional music which are then aligned in confrontational situation with western equivalent instruments – violin, cello, guitar, double bass.
The idea is that bow instruments from different cultures use the platform as an exchange and cultural exploration. Each instrument plays a simple line, but each line is carefully placed in relation to the other, and the effect of the repetitive rhythmic and melodic figures is hypnotic. And the make-up of the band, young and old musicians and all from diverse cultural groups showing a bridging of knowledge and generational gaps that move past the cultural stereotypes that are part of our Apartheid heritage. The project is the initiative of Azanian Oasis Group.

Has written and commented extensively on mining conditions both before and after the massacre at Marikana. Winner of the Nat Nakasa Award and of the Labour Media Award.
Professor Ralph Hamann

***************
Synposis of MINERS SHOT DOWN:
In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa’s biggest platinum mines began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days later the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress the strike, killing 34 and injuring many more. Using the point of view of the Marikana miners, Miners Shot Down follows the strike from day one, showing the courageous but isolated fight waged by a group of low-paid workers against the combined forces of the mining company Lonmin, the ANC government and their allies in the National Union of Mineworkers.
What emerges is collusion at the top, spiralling violence and the country’s first post-apartheid massacre. South Africa will never be the same again.

Cape Town’s Student heartland creates a powerful geometry of opportunity around Cape Town’s planned Second Metropolitan Node at Tygerberg. With more than 100000 students, five higher learning institutions of national significance and excellent logistics and infrastructural linkages, the Student City opportunity will be a major driver of urban regeneration.
The seminar explores the meaning and implications of design-driven planning, the experience thus far on the Voortrekker Road Corridor and the potentials and possibilities for weaving together an integrated matrix of learning, living, working and cultural opportunities. Place making is seen as a central discipline in the process of developing Student City.
Questions will be explored as to the nature, location and conceptual drivers of the Student City to guide on-going work by the Greater Tygerberg Partnership, the City of Cape Town and universities and colleges.

Co-creating Open Streets
Event Details
Celebrating the launch of the Open Streets Days 2014 programme.
Event Details
Cape Town’s streets could be much more than they are…
Safe and cohesive communities.
Platforms for creative expression of local cultures and values.
Places for recreation and social interaction.
Contributors to job creation and local economic activity.
Providers of choice in how we move around the city.
Join us for a fun event at the DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN to discuss, challenge and propose ideas for Open Streets. We will be announcing the programme for the remainder of 2014, and running breakaway sessions around each of the above-mentioned themes with ‘street’ movers and shakers. Together we can co-create shared places that embody respect for all and help bridge the social and spatial divides of our city.

Event Details
GEM is a mobile reward system for social volunteers, backed by the Dutch Social Trade Organisation- STRO. Corporate sponsors that wish to support social volunteers can donate goods, services or money. These resources are then converted into GEMs and are earned by doing community work, separating waste, planting trees etc.
GEMs can then be spent on airtime, pre-paid electricity, movie tickets and groceries. One of the main goals of GEM is to stimulate corporate counterparts to apply their Corporate Social Responsibility Investments through the GEM model. In Department of Design, the Dutch Social Trade Organisation and GEM aim to show the value that GEM can add to CSR strategies and activities, not to mention the incredible impact they will have in #cocreating an engaging and productive society

Event Details
Hands of Honour would like to explain how up-cycling obsolete stock collected from corporate partners has improved our standard of living and enhanced our urban environment. We have also collaborated with four established artists to have their works featured on garden benches made from wood destined for landfill, which we will also exhibit.
Hands of Honour brings together three best-practices: While ‘up-cycling’ or reusing waste materials has been done informally by waste pickers scouring the dumps, the organisation works directly with the waste generators to formalise this process, representing something new in South Africa. Corporations are the main ‘donors’ of waste to the organisation, donating rather than disposing of their waste. Hands of Honour’s Job Training Programme provides skills and confidence to those members of society who have ‘checked out’. This both increases employment and rehabilitates the workers.
This process funds urban renewal initiatives, focusing on those areas that are identified by the community as being flash points for crime. Taken together, these elements result in a programme that can sustain itself and contribute to a greener city, job creation and reclaiming derelict urban spaces.
Hands of Honour and their Regeneration of City and Soul (#WDC368) project is a WDC recognised project.

Event Details
Sematsatsa Library encourages everyone to take part in a journey to discover lives – female lives – black and proud who imagine an enlightened world through their work. From East to west, North to South, we’re involving arts organisations, businesses and civil society to give names of women who, through their work, propose Africanism and womanism.
We will also be unpacking certain activities we’re already having and also sharing some of the people we think do not find a space in the world for their work to be seen and be honored, whilst they’re still in our midst. Our expectation is to have 100 names by the end of August 2014, during the women’s month and launch Sematsatsa Library during the month of September with some of our ladies in attendance. We’re also calling on individuals to be part of our Board of Advisors, should anyone be interested in unpacking and documenting the historical , economic and social impact of women on our continent.

Event Details
In the Netherlands, we designed a game for older persons suffering from dementia in collaboration with two universities, a game design company and several elderly care providers. The game is called the ‘Active Cues’ and stimulates physical activity and social interaction for moderate-to severe dementia patients.
The Active Cues consist of six games which all stimulate dementia patients to physically interact with light projections on the dining table. For example, they can play with fish that swim around, sweep away leaves or throw a ball to each other. During our evaluation study, we found significant improvement in physical activity and happiness from the games. Players actively engaged in the game and happily chatted about the games with each other.
Currently we are taking two next steps, for which we are looking for new partners and expertise: (1) the Active Cues will be produced for the European market and we want to explore whether we can produce and market it also in South Africa. (2) we are setting up a new consortium to redesign the Active Cues for children with autism. This project will take place from January until July 2015 in Cape Town and we are looking for organisations, schools and companies that are interested in participation. The aim for this workshop is to share knowledge in both fields: design for dementia care and education for autism, and explore the opportunities for new collaborations.

Join us for a presentation by Karin Benjamin and Luuk Kemperman of Play to Learn. Play to Learn is a project initiated by Industrial Design Engineering students from the HAN University in The Netherlands, emphasising user-centred innovative design in the Theewaterskloof municipality.
The educational toys of Play to Learn are designed based on the needs of the children in Theewaterskloof school. Interdisciplinary research showed that toys could help to improve the fine motor skills of children. The aesthetic toys that were designed and made improve the fine motor skills as well as the hand-eye coordination and concentration activities of the 5- and 6-year-olds.
By improving the fine motor skills and social competences the children’s learning abilities, future job opportunities and quality of life will increase. Additionally, Play to Learn seeks to stimulate transfer of skills both in designing and producing as well as in business skills by collaborating with local craftsmen.
