The #cocreatemycity is a 10-day project in which multidisciplinary groups of students from Netherlands and South Africa work together to produce tangible solutions for urban challenges designated by Durban. The most promising and innovative teams will be implementing their solutions in Durban.

There are strong bonds of friendship that already exist between the province of KwaZulu-Natal and the Netherlands.  A Sister City Agreement between Rotterdam and Durban has already been established in 1997. In 2013 the Embassy has facilitated the establishment of a Centre of Expertise in eThekwini with specific focus on water and sanitation. Furthermore, a ground breaking Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by the Kingdom of the Netherlands, eThekwini Municipality and Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) in November 2015  to initiate a partnership between the parties to share knowledge and expertise on sustainable industrial development. It is upon the basis of these ties that we  wish to expand on our relationship with the City of eThekwini and the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. Currently the Netherlands is the fifth largest exporting partner to the region and Durban is home to many large Dutch multinational companies such as Vopak, Unilever, Royal Haskoning and De Heus, to name but a few.

This project strives to connect Dutch and South African students and establish cooperation in order to find tangible solutions to urban challenges in the city of Durban. By conducting this project, opportunities for Dutch companies are identified in the region. By connecting partners in business, government and knowledge institutes, we aim to #cocreateMYCITY Durban!
