CBI CRAFT CONNECTIONS PANEL DISCUSSION
How can connecting local craft traditions to contemporary markets create sustainable businesses?
This panel discussion aims to connect South African businesses to Dutch counterparts with the aim of fostering mutually beneficial long-term relationships. The need for ‘contemporary local,’ for the tangible and the specific, has inspired contemporary designers to take up and transform local crafts, in their own countries and abroad.
In the Netherlands crafts that had almost disappeared were revived by prominent designers, while in Brazil, India and China collaborations between crafts communities and contemporary designers have led to inspiring results that have created new jobs for local communities. The panel will focus on what these developments mean for South Africa, in terms of shaping and representing a specific and contemporary local South African culture, and of developing a sustainable business with international scope.
A related keynote by Ineke Hans & Inga Gubeka will commence shortly thereafter, followed by an informal drinks reception.
This workshop is a co-creation between Department of Design and the Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI).s.
