Certhon is a Dutch company that specialsies in the design and installation of horticultural products. Their signature pieces are greenhouses built with advanced materials, innovative designs and quality systems that save energy and water.
One of the presenters at Department of Design, Certhon tells us more about their initiative.
HOW CAN YOUR PRODUCTS CONTRIBUTE TO SOUTH AFRICA’S HORTICULTURAL SECTOR?
The Certhon techniques for greenhouses and installations like irrigation, heating, cooling and the accompanying control systems are contributing to the reduction of energy and water usage. Certhon uses natural energy sources, like wind and sun energy, in order to make the systems function optimally in a sustainable and eco-friendly way for the horticultural sector in South Africa.
WHAT CAN THE NETHERLANDS LEARN FROM SOUTH AFRICA?
Climate management is just as much a challenge as creating a climate. The biggest environmental issues South Africa faces are due to heavy industry. The Netherlands can learn a lot about the way this is affecting the environment.
Secondly, it is noteworthy how South Africa is reacting to the manufacturing of fresh, healthy food and making it available to everybody.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH AT DEPARTMENT OF DESIGN?
In Department of Design, Certhon will present a piece of the past, present and the future of the 24/7 production of fresh vegetables with a minimal stake of energy and water.
Within Certhon, there’s already the idea of growing products in cubic meters instead of square meters. Producing more on less is essential, as is taking the waste of available energy and water into account.
